Two owners of a Johannesburg security company have been killed in a brazen armed robbery while transporting a large sum of cash, police say.
Shaheed Abdul Hamid Moosa, known as Hamza, and Hafidh Yusuf Modan died in the attack on Thursday afternoon in Ormonde, south of the city.
The pair were personally escorting the cash for a client, travelling in a bulletproof white Toyota Fortuner with several armed guards. A white armoured Ford bakkie provided escort.
The ambush happened on Crownwood Road. A gang in three luxury vehicles—a Porsche, BMW and Mercedes—armed with high-calibre firearms, confronted the convoy after a high-speed chase that began on the M1 highway, according to witnesses.
Eyewitnesses described a fierce gun battle as the robbers tried to block the Fortuner, believed to hold the cash in two large black bags. “It started about 10 minutes earlier on the M1,” one witness told the Laudium Sun. “They were ramming the security vehicle and shooting wildly. Bullets were flying everywhere.”
Gauteng police said the two businessmen were shot dead at the scene. One guard suffered serious injuries and was rushed to hospital. Among the attackers, one was killed and another wounded.
Detectives believe the robbers made off with the cash bags after the shooting. The exact amount has not been disclosed.
“It’s a shocking escalation in cash-in-transit violence,” said a police spokesperson. “We’re investigating and appealing for witnesses.”
The incident has renewed fears over armed heists in South Africa’s economic hub, where security firms often handle multimillion-rand payrolls.
Last year, dozens of similar attacks left guards and civilians dead.
Moosa and Modan, both prominent in Johannesburg’s security sector, leave behind families and colleagues mourning their loss. Tributes poured in online, praising their dedication.
Police have sealed off Crownwood Road and recovered shell casings. Three vehicles linked to the gang were found abandoned nearby.
Investigations continue.
