Limpopo — The names have been released of five people killed in a horrific crash on South Africa’s N1 highway, in what authorities describe as a case of suspected reckless driving.
The victims were Collins Maswanganyi, his wife Tintswalo, and their two children, Kuhlula and Katekani. Their neighbour, Extra Tlukani, who was travelling with the family, also perished in the accident near Mookgophong, close to Modimolle.
Limpopo’s MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Violet Mathye, said the crash happened when the driver — now under arrest — allegedly made an illegal U-turn. “Alcohol and drugs are suspected to have played a role,” she told reporters, urging drivers to exercise caution on busy routes.
Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene, with the family’s minibus colliding head-on with an oncoming truck.
Emergency services rushed to the site, but all five were pronounced dead at the scene.
The Maswanganyi family and Mr Tlukani were laid to rest in emotional ceremonies over the weekend in Xikundu village near Malamulele. The four Maswanganyis were buried on Saturday, with Mr Tlukani’s funeral scheduled for Monday.
In Alexandra Extension 7, where the family lived, grief has gripped the community. A candlelight vigil is planned for Sunday evening at “Busy Corner”, drawing neighbours and friends to honour the lives lost.
Collins Maswanganyi, 48, was a pillar of the local Tsonga community. He owned a popular tavern that doubled as a cultural hub, famous for hosting Makhwaya music events celebrating heritage and unity.
Remarkably, despite selling alcohol, Mr Maswanganyi abstained himself and was known for his discipline and humility.
“Young entrepreneurs idolised him,” said one longtime patron. “He wasn’t just a businessman — he uplifted everyone around him.”
The tragedy has reignited calls for stricter enforcement on the N1, one of South Africa’s deadliest highways. Last year, Limpopo recorded over 400 road fatalities, many linked to impaired driving.
Police investigations continue, with the driver facing multiple charges. Community leaders say the loss leaves a void, but Mr Maswanganyi’s legacy of leadership endures.
