Evander, South Africa – Four men have been handed life imprisonment sentences by the Evander Regional Court for the kidnapping and rape of a 37-year-old woman in a case that has highlighted the persistent struggle against gender-based violence. Khumbula Alfred Magubane (33), Nkosinathi Manana (34), Vusi Kleinboy Nhlapo (29), and Sibusiso Edward Namane (25) received the severe penalties on January 28, 2026, following their conviction on December 2, 2025.
The court heard harrowing details of the incident, which occurred on Sunday, February 24, 2019. The victim was forcibly abducted by the four suspects, who had concealed their identities with hoodies. She was grabbed from behind and bundled into a vehicle, then driven to an undisclosed location.
During the ordeal, the victim’s attempt to escape was thwarted by her captors. She was subsequently taken to an open field where she was subjected to rape by all four individuals. The perpetrators then moved to the Embalenhle area, where the victim endured further sexual assault inside a shack.
In a critical turn of events, one of the perpetrators reportedly intervened, preventing the others from carrying out a plan to kill the victim, thereby saving her life.The case was meticulously investigated by the Secunda Family Violence Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit.
Their diligent efforts led to the tracing and apprehension of all four suspects, who were positively linked to the crime through thorough investigative work.In addition to the life sentences for rape, the men also received five-year imprisonment terms for kidnapping. The court further declared all convicted individuals unfit to possess a firearm and ordered their particulars to be added to the National Register for Sex Offenders.
This judgment sends a strong message regarding the justice system’s commitment to combating violent crime and protecting vulnerable members of society.
