Vosloorus, South Africa — The long-awaited trial in the murder case of South African football star Senzo Meyiwa resumes today, marking 12 years since he was tragically shot dead at his girlfriend Kelly Khumalo’s home in Vosloorus. The case has remained a focal point for justice seekers and fans alike, with many hoping the renewed hearings will finally bring clarity to the unresolved murder.
The initial investigations involved two dedicated teams, one under the direction of then-Police Minister Bheki Cele and the other reporting to former Police Commissioner Khehla Sithole. Adding a layer of complexity to the proceedings, police are currently investigating a serious incident involving an armed robbery and attempted kidnapping of a police officer that occurred on May 15, 2025, in Lombardy East, Johannesburg. The incident took place at approximately 00:15 near a local golf course.
According to reports, a Police Sergeant was returning from an official operation when he was followed and rear-ended by a white Nissan Almera. Upon stopping to assess the situation, he was confronted by three armed suspects, one of whom was reported to be carrying a firearm. The assailants overpowered the officer, robbing him of critical equipment, including his state-issued 9mm Pistol, ammunition, and a laptop bag containing sensitive materials related to the ongoing Meyiwa trial.
Among the stolen items were USB drives containing trial information, copies of statements, and other official documentation directly relevant to the Meyiwa murder case. Such theft raises significant concerns about the integrity of the investigation and the potential impact on the trial’s proceedings.
During the robbery, the suspects attempted to force the Sergeant into the boot of their vehicle. However, he managed to escape into a nearby field without sustaining injuries. The assailants fled the scene with the stolen items, and an investigation is currently underway.
As the Meyiwa case resumes in court, the police and legal authorities face increasing pressure to ensure that justice is served without further obstructions. The dual focus on the trial and the recent robbery incident underscores the ongoing challenges in high-profile cases and the stakes involved for all parties.
